Though fans can experience a similar, much less serious multiplayer third-person shooter with diving and bullet time in the free-to-play Double Action: Boogaloo, a new entry in the Max Payne franchise could bring fresh multiplayer modes that would stand out in today's shooter market. It even managed to make multiplayer bullet time work. Though the servers are pretty empty 10 years after the game's release, Max Payne 3's multiplayer was fluid, fast-paced and engaging. Max Payne 3s release has been delayed to May of this year from its targeted release date of March, Take Two Interactive announced today. It's also the only entry in the franchise with online multiplayer. With slow-mo bullet time, over-the-top diving from cover to cover and several set pieces that could easily be in a John Woo movie, Max Payne 3 is a gameplay masterpiece. It may even be the peak of the genre's gameplay. Though some fans of the franchise may think of Max Payne 3 as the weakest entry when it comes to narrative and writing, it's undeniably the peak of the franchise's gameplay. Despite the third-person perspective of the Max Payne franchise, players have always closely connected with Max. There aren't many game narratives that can elicit as many visceral emotional reactions as the first Max Payne, which made players determined to see the game through to the end for the character's sake. Now before you go jumping to any hasty conclusions, let me make it abundantly clear that I’ve always loved Rockstar’s games: Red Dead.

As a result, many modern shooters' storylines come down to defeating terrorist threats or saving the world, which can be fun at times but are less immediately relatable than more character-focused narratives.Īs far as engaging narratives and character-driven storytelling go, the Max Payne games are still second to none in the genre. Many modern shooters have passable storylines and single-player modes, but it's undeniable that less time and effort is generally put into the single-player experience so that multiplayer can be further refined, as here is where most modern shooter games' revenue comes from.
